Takhrij Hadith 1000: "When I was taken up…"

When I was taken up on the Ascension, I passed by men whose skins were being cut with shears of fire. I said: "Who are these?" He said: "They are those who adorn themselves for adornment (to show off)." Then I passed by a foul-smelling pit, and I heard loud cries coming from it. I said: "Who are these, O Jibril?" He said: "They are women who beautified themselves for adornment and did what was unlawful for them." Then I passed by women and men suspended by their breasts. I said: "Who are these, O Jibril?" He said: "These are the slanderers and tale-bearers. This is the meaning of the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: {Woe to every slanderer and backbiter}."
