Takhrij Hadith 1188: "That a Jewish man came…"

On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, he said:

“
That a Jewish man came to him and said 'O Ibn 'Abbas, I want to ask you about things that if you inform me of their interpretation, then you are indeed the Ibn 'Abbas. He said 'What are they? He said 'Why was Rajab named Rajab? And about Sha'ban, why was it named Sha'ban? He said As for Rajab, it is because goodness is anticipated in it abundantly for Sha'ban, and it was named deaf because the angels plug their ears due to the intensity of the loud raising of their voices with glorification and sanctification.
