Takhrij Hadith 1239: "Renouncing the worldly life is…"

Renouncing the worldly life is more bitter than patience and harder than shattering swords in the cause of Allah. No one abandons it except that Allah grants him a reward like that of the martyrs. Renouncing it means eating little, avoiding excess in food, and disliking the praise of people. Whoever loves the praise of people loves the worldly life and its pleasures, and whoever desires everlasting bliss, let him renounce the worldly life and the praise of people.
