He was accompanied by a man to whom he was teaching the Quran. He said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “My companion whom you saw with me bought a bow and gifted it to me; may I accept it from him?” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “No”. He waited until a year had passed, then returned and asked: “O Messenger of Allah, may I accept it?” He replied: “No”. He waited yet another year and asked: “O Messenger of Allah, may I accept that bow?” He replied: “No”. He then asked: “O Messenger of Allah, then may I not accept it, so that it remains with him?”. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O ‘Awf, do you wish to meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with a burning ember from Hell between your shoulders?”.
