Takhrij Hadith 1268: "Shaddad ibn Aws was once…"

Shaddad ibn Aws was once on a journey and stopped at a campsite. He said to his servant: "Bring us the food spread so that we may enjoy it." I disapproved of what he had said, so he said: "Since I embraced Islam, I have never uttered a word without restraining and examining it, except for these words of mine. So do not hold them against me, but preserve what I tell you instead. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'When people begin storing up gold and silver, then store up these words: "O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in every matter, and determination upon right guidance. I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your blessings, and to worship You in the best manner. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I ask You for the good that You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil that You know. I seek Your forgiveness for what You know. Indeed, You are the Knower of all unseen things."
