Takhrij Hadith 1331: "I used to suffer from…"
Narrated from his mother, Hamnah bint Jahsh, who said:
“
I used to suffer from severe and heavy prolonged non-menstrual bleeding. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to seek his ruling and inform him about it, and I found him in the house of my sister, Zaynab bint Jahsh. I said: “O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who suffers from severe and heavy bleeding, so what do you advise me regarding it? It has prevented me from praying and fasting.” He said: “I suggest cotton for you, for it absorbs the blood.” She said: “It is more than that.” He said: “Then use a piece of cloth.” She said: “It is more than that; it flows heavily!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I will command you with two options; whichever of them you do, it will suffice you over the other. But if you are strong enough to do both, you know best.” He said to her: “This is but a kick from among the kicks of Satan. So consider yourself in menses for six or seven days—in the knowledge of Allah Almighty—then perform a full ritual bath (ghusl). Once you see that you have become clean and purified, pray for twenty-three or twenty-four nights and their days, and fast, for that will suffice you. Do this every month just as women menstruate and become clean according to the timing of their menses and purity. And if you are able to delay the Dhuhr prayer and hasten the 'Asr prayer, perform ghusl and combine the two prayers—Dhuhr and 'Asr—and delay the Maghrib prayer and hasten the 'Isha prayer, then perform ghusl and combine the two prayers, then do so. And perform ghusl for Fajr prayer, then do so. And fast if you are able to do that.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “And this is the more pleasing of the two options to me.””
