Takhrij Hadith 1351: "The first shortcoming that entered…"
ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“
The first shortcoming that entered among the Children of Israel was that a man would meet another man and say: “O you, fear Allah and refrain from what you are doing, for it is not lawful for you.” Then he would meet him the following day, and that would not prevent him from eating with him, drinking with him, and sitting in his company. When they did this, Allah struck their hearts against one another. Then He said: {Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary.} until His saying {many of them are defiantly disobedient}. Then he said: “No, by Allah! You must enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong; you must restrain the wrongdoer by the hand, compel him firmly toward the truth, and force him to adhere to the truth.””
