Takhrij Hadith 1415: "One day 'Uthman sat down,…"
On the authority of Abu 'Aqil, that he heard Al-Harith, the freed slave of 'Uthman, say:
“
One day 'Uthman sat down, and we sat with him. The caller to prayer came to him, so he called for water in a vessel—I think it contained about a mudd—and performed ablution (wudu'). Then he said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution just as I have performed this ablution of mine, and then he said: "Whoever performs ablution as I have performed this ablution of mine, then stands and prays the Dhuhr prayer, his sins committed between it and the Subh (Fajr) prayer will be forgiven. Then, if he prays 'Asr, his sins between it and the Dhuhr prayer will be forgiven. Then, if he prays Maghrib, his sins between it and the 'Asr prayer will be forgiven. Then, if he prays 'Isha, his sins between it and the Maghrib prayer will be forgiven. Afterwards, he might spend his night tossing and turning [in sleep]. Then, if he stands, performs ablution, and prays Subh, his sins between it and the 'Isha prayer will be forgiven—and these are the good deeds that wipe out bad deeds." They said: 'These are the good deeds; so what are the everlasting good deeds (Al-Baqiyat Al-Salihat), O 'Uthman?' He replied: 'They are: La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah), Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest), and La hawla wa-la quwwata illa billah (There is no power nor strength except through Allah).'"”
