Takhrij Hadith 1468: "Abu Bakr al-Siddiq never missed…"
It is narrated without a chain of transmission:
“
Abu Bakr al-Siddiq never missed the first rak'ah behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — except on one day, when he was slightly delayed and nearly missed the first rak'ah, but caught up with it during the bowing. While he was bowing, he praised Allah for having caught up with it. At that moment, revelation descended upon the Messenger ﷺ, informing him that Allah, the Exalted, had heard Abu Bakr al-Siddiq's praise. So the Messenger ﷺ rose from the bowing saying: “Sami' Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears whoever praises Him).” The Companions were puzzled, but Abu Bakr knew that he was the one being referred to, so he responded, saying: “Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (Our Lord, and to You is all praise).” And so it became an established Sunnah until the Day of Judgment.”
