Hadith 162
Language:

Sa’id ibn Jubayr narrated: I said to Ibn ‘Abbas:

“

Nawf al-Bikali claims that Moses [the companion of Al-Khidr] was not Moses of the Children of Israel, but rather another Moses. Ibn ‘Abbas replied: "The enemy of Allah has lied! Ubayy ibn Ka’b narrated to us that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Once, Moses the Prophet stood up to deliver a sermon to the Children of Israel. He was asked: "Who is the most learned of all people?" He replied: "I am". Allah rebuked him, for he did not attribute absolute knowledge to Him. So Allah revealed to him: "Indeed, at the junction of the two seas, there is a servant of Mine who is more learned than you". Moses asked: "O my Lord, how can I meet him?" It was said to him: "Carry a fish in a basket; wherever you lose the fish, there he will be". So Moses set out, accompanied by his young man, Yusha’ (Joshua) ibn Nun. They carried a fish in a basket until they reached a rock, where they laid down their heads and slept. The fish then slipped out of the basket {and took its way into the sea, slipping away} [18:61]. It was a cause of amazement for Moses and his young man. They continued traveling for the rest of that night and the following day. When morning came, Moses said to his young man: {Bring us our meal! We have certainly been exhausted by today’s journey. } [18:62]. Moses did not feel any fatigue until he had passed the place he was commanded to reach. His young man said to him: {Do you remember when we rested by the rock? That is when I forgot the fish } [18:63]. Moses said: {That is what we were seeking! So they returned, retracing their footsteps} [18:64]. When they reached the rock, they found a man covered with a garment, or [the narrator] said: he had wrapped himself in his garment. Moses greeted him, and Al-Khidr replied: "How can there be such a greeting (Peace) in your land?" Moses said: "I am Moses." He asked: "Moses of the Children of Israel?" Moses replied: "Yes." He then said: {May I follow you, provided that you teach me some of the right guidance you have been taught?} [18:66]. Al-Khidr said: {You certainly cannot be patient [enough] with me} [18:67]. "O Moses, I possess a knowledge from the knowledge of Allah which He has taught me and which you do not know, and you possess a knowledge which He has taught you and which I do not know". Moses said: {You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey any of your orders} [18:69]. So they set out, walking along the sea coast, as they had no boat. A ship passed by them, and they spoke to the crew to take them on board. The crew recognized Al-Khidr and took them both aboard without charging a fare. Then a bird came and perched on the edge of the ship and dipped its beak once or twice into the sea. Al-Khidr said: "O Moses, my knowledge and your knowledge in comparison to Allah's knowledge is like the amount of water taken by this bird from the sea with its beak". Then Al-Khidr went to one of the planks of the ship and pulled it out. Moses said: "These people carried us without fare, yet you have intentionally damaged their ship to drown its people?" Al-Khidr replied: {Did I not say that you cannot have patience with me?} Moses pleaded: {Excuse me for forgetting, and do not be hard on me} [18:72/73]. This first instance was due to Moses’ forgetfulness. They proceeded until they came across a boy playing with other boys. Al-Khidr took him by the head and snatched it off with his hands. Moses said: {Have you killed an innocent soul, who killed no one? You have certainly done a horrible thing} [18:74]. Al-Khidr replied: {Did I not tell you that you cannot have patience with me? } [18:75]. (Ibn ‘Uyaynah remarked: This second rebuke was more emphatic). {So they moved on until they came to the people of a town. They asked them for food, but the people refused to give them hospitality. There they found a wall ready to collapse, so he set it right. Moses said to him: If you wanted, you could have demanded a fee for this}[18:77] He signaled with his hand like this and set it upright. Al-Khidr replied: {This is the parting of our ways } [18:78]. The Prophet ﷺ then said: “May Allah have mercy on Moses! We wished he had remained patient so that more of their story could have been related to us”.
