Takhrij Hadith 1631: "I was standing among some…"
It was narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said:
“
I was standing among some people who were supplicating to Allah for ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, after he had been placed upon his bier. Suddenly, a man behind me placed his elbow on my shoulder and said: May Allah have mercy on you. I had truly hoped that Allah would place you with your two companions, for I would often hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I, Abu Bakr, and ʿUmar were; I, Abu Bakr, and ʿUmar did; and I, Abu Bakr, and ʿUmar set out. So I truly hoped that Allah would place you with them both. I turned around, and it was ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.”
