It was narrated from Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah:
“
A man passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) saw in his strength and energy something that impressed them. They said: O Messenger of Allah, if only this were in the cause of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: If he is striving to provide for his young children, then he is in the cause of Allah. If he went out striving to provide for his two elderly parents, then he is in the cause of Allah. If he went out striving to provide for himself so as to keep himself chaste and independent, then he is in the cause of Allah. If he went out striving to provide for his family, then he is in the cause of Allah. But if he went out striving out of pride and seeking increase, then he is in the cause of ṭāghūt.”
