Takhrij Hadith 1780: "I came to the Messenger…"

I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while there was a cross around my neck. He said: “O ʿAdi, remove this idol from your neck.” So I threw it off. Then I came to him while he was reciting from Surat al-Baraʾah: {They have taken their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah}. I said: “Indeed, we do not worship them.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do they not forbid what Allah has made lawful, and you then consider it forbidden; and they permit what Allah has forbidden, and you then consider it lawful?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “That is their worship.”
