Takhrij Hadith 1838: "Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan ordered…"

Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan ordered Sa'd, saying: "What prevents you from cursing Abu Turab (i.e., 'Ali)?" He said: "As for what you have mentioned, [I recall] three things that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about him — I will never curse him, for even to have one of them said about me would be dearer to me than red camels (i.e., the most prized wealth). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say to him, when he left him behind during one of his military expeditions, and 'Ali said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, you are leaving me behind with the women and children!' — the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: 'Are you not content to be to me as Harun (Aaron) was to Musa (Moses), except that there is no prophethood after me?' And I heard him say on the day of Khaybar: 'I will surely give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love.'" He said: We all stretched our necks [in hope] for it, but he said: "Call 'Ali to me." So he was brought, suffering from an eye ailment, and he (the Prophet ﷺ) spat in his eye and handed him the banner, and Allah granted him victory. And when this verse was revealed: {Then say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons…} (Qur'an 3:61), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called 'Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn, and said: "O Allah, these are my family."
