Takhrij Hadith 185: "When ‘Uthman ibn Maz’un died,…"

Ibn ‘Abbas narrated:

“
When ‘Uthman ibn Maz’un died, a woman said: “Congratulations on Paradise, O ‘Uthman ibn Maz’un”. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at her angrily and asked: “And how do you know?” She replied: “He was your horseman and your companion”. The Prophet ﷺ remarked: “By Allah, although I am the Messenger of Allah, I do not know what will be done with me” leaving the people feeling anxious for ‘Uthman. When Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died, he said: “Join our righteous predecessor, ‘Uthman ibn Maz’un” at which the women began to weep; so ‘Umar started to strike them with his whip. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took him by the hand and said: “Gently, O ‘Umar” before adding: “Weep, but beware of the wailing inspired by Satan, for whatever comes from the eye and the heart is from Allah and is a mercy, but whatever comes from the hand and the tongue is from Satan”.
