Takhrij Hadith 1856: "One evening, the Companions of…"

One evening, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out intending to visit the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Among them were Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthman, ʿAli, Salman, and ʿAmmar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with them all). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out while he was overcome by feverish sweating—meaning, the sweat caused by the fever—which was pouring from him like al-jumān, meaning pearls. He then wiped his forehead and said: “May Allah curse the accursed one” three times. He then lowered his head. ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Whom did you just curse?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “The wicked Iblis, the enemy of Allah. His tail entered his anus, and he laid seven eggs. They are his offspring who have been assigned to tempt the children of Adam. The first of them is called al-Mudhish. He has been assigned to the scholars, turning them toward various conflicting desires and whims. The second is called Ḥadīth. He is the companion of the prayer. He makes them forget the remembrance of Allah, plays with them through pebbles, and casts yawning and drowsiness upon them until one of them falls asleep. Then it is said to him: You have fallen asleep. He says: I did not sleep. He then enters the prayer without ablution. By Him in Whose Hand is the soul of Muḥammad, one of them will leave his prayer having gained neither half of it, nor a quarter of it, nor a tenth of it, while its sin will be greater than its reward. The third is called al-Zalabanūn. He is the companion of the markets. He commands people to give short measure and short weight, to lie when buying and selling, to embellish their goods, and to praise them when selling them, until he succeeds in getting them sold. The fourth is called Batr. He is the companion of tearing open garments, scratching the face, and calling for woe and destruction when calamity strikes, until he causes the reward of the afflicted person to be lost. The fifth is called Manshūṭ. He is the companion of false reports, tale-bearing, slanderous insinuations, and boasting, until he causes the servants of Allah to fall into sin. The sixth is called Wāsim. He is the companion of fornication. He blows into the man's private parts and the woman's buttocks until each of them commits fornication with the other. The seventh is called al-Aʿwar. He is the companion of theft. He says to the thief: Use what you steal to relieve your poverty, pay off your debt, and cover your needs; then repent.”
