Regarding the verse: {And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord} the Muslims said: “O Messenger of Allah, were the Children of Israel more honored in the sight of Allah than we are?” He said: “Whenever one of them committed a sin, the expiation for his sin would be written on his doorstep: ‘Cut off your nose; cut off your ear; do such-and-such’ and so on”. Then, when these four verses were revealed, the first of which is: {And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord} the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Shall I not tell you of something better than that?’ Then he recited these verses to them.”
