Hadith No. 19
Language:

Ibn Mas’ud reported: the prophet (may Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said :

“

The last person to enter Paradise will be a man who will walk [on the bridge above the Fire] at times, stumble at times, and be singed by the Fire at times. When he finally passes beyond it, he will turn back toward it and say: “Blessed is He Who has saved me from you. Allah has given me something He has not given to anyone among the earliest or the latest generations” Then, a tree will be raised up for him. He will say: “O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may seek shade in its shadow and drink of its water” Allah Almighty will say: “O son of Adam, if I grant you this, you will ask Me for something else?”. The man will reply: “No, my Lord” and he will promise Him that he will not ask for anything else. His Lord will excuse him because he sees things which he cannot restrain himself from desiring. So, Allah will bring him near it, and he will shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Then, another tree will be raised up for him, more beautiful than the first. He will say: “O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may drink of its water and seek shade in its shadow. I will not ask You for anything else”. Allah will say: “O son of Adam, did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me for anything else? if I bring you near it, you will ask for something else?”. The man will promise Him again that he will not ask for anything else. His Lord will excuse him because he sees things which he cannot restrain himself from desiring. So, Allah will bring him near it, and he will shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Then, a tree will be raised up for him at the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the first two. He will say: “O my Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I may seek shade in its shadow and drink of its water. I will not ask You for anything else” Allah will say: “O son of Adam, did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?” He will say: “Yes, my Lord, I will not ask You for anything besides this” His Lord will excuse him because he sees things which he cannot restrain himself from desiring. When Allah brings him near it, the man will hear the voices of the people of Paradise. He will then say: “O Lord, admit me into it" . Allah will say: “O son of Adam, what will bring an end to your requests? Would it please you if I gave you the world and the like of it along with it?”. The man will say: 'O Lord, are You mocking me, though You are the Lord of the Worlds?'" . At this point, Ibn Mas’ud laughed and asked: "Will you not ask me why I am laughing?" They asked: "Why are you laughing?" He said: "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed. They asked him: “Why are you laughing, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied: 'At the laughter of the Lord of the Worlds when the man said: "Are You mocking me, though You are the Lord of the Worlds?" Allah will say: "I am not mocking you, but I am Capable of doing whatever I will”
