Takhrij Hadith 1954: "There are three destructive things,…"
On the authority of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“
There are three destructive things, three things that bring salvation, three things that expiate sins, and three things that raise one’s rank. As for the destructive things: stinginess that is obeyed, desires that are followed, and a person’s admiration of himself. As for the things that bring salvation: being just in times of anger and contentment, moderation in times of poverty and wealth, and fearing Allah in private and in public. As for the things that expiate sins: waiting for one prayer after another, performing ablution thoroughly during times of hardship, and walking to the congregational prayers. As for the things that raise one’s rank: feeding people, spreading greetings of peace, and praying at night while people are asleep.”
