Takhrij Hadith 1960: "Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf changed eleven…"
It is narrated from ʿAwf ibn Abi Jamilah:
“
Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf changed eleven words in the Muṣḥaf of ʿUthmān. He said: In Sūrat al-Baqarah, it originally read: “lam yatasanna wa-nzur” {it has not changed with time. And look}, and he changed it to: “lam yatasannah”. In Surat al-Maʾidah, it originally read: “shari'atan wa-minhajan” {a law and a way}, and he changed it to: “shir'atan wa-minhajan”. In Sūrat Yūnus, it originally read: “huwa alladhī yanshurukum” {He is the One who spreads you forth}, and he changed it to: “yusayyirukum” {He is the One who enables you to travel}. In Sūrat Yūsuf, it originally read: “anā ātīkum bi-taʾwīlihi” {I will bring you its interpretation}, and he changed it to: “anā unabbiʾukum bi-taʾwīlihi” {I will inform you of its interpretation}. In Sūrat al-Muʾminūn, it originally read: “sayaqūlūna lillāh” {They will say: “To Allah”} in all three occurrences, so he changed the latter two to: “Allāhu Allāh” {Allah, Allah}. In Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ, in the story of Nūḥ, it originally read: “mina al-mukhrājīn” {among those who are cast out}, and in the story of Lūṭ it read: “mina al-marjūmīn” {among those who are stoned}. So he changed the wording in the story of Nūḥ to: “mina al-marjūmīn” {among those who are stoned}, and in the story of Lūṭ to: “mina al-mukhrājīn” {among those who are cast out}. In Sūrat al-Zukhruf, it originally read: “naḥnu qasamnā baynahum maʿāyishahum” {It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood}, and he changed it to: “maʿīshatahum” {their livelihood}. In Sūrat al-Muḥammad [those who disbelieved], it originally read: “min māʾin ghayri yasin” {of water, never spoiling}, and he changed it to: “min māʾin ghayri āsin” {of water that has not become foul-smelling}. In Sūrat al-Ḥadīd, it originally read: “fa-alladhīna āmanū minkum wa-ittaqaw lahum ajrun kabīr” {For those who have believed among you and fear Allah, there will be a great reward.}, and he changed it to: “minkum wa-anfaqū” {among you and spent [in charity]}. And in Sūrat Idhā al-Shamsu Kuwwirat, it originally read: “wa-mā huwa ʿalā al-ghaybi bi-ẓanīn” {and he is not withholding [knowledge] of the unseen}, and he changed it to: “bi-ḍanīn” {and he is not miserly regarding the unseen}.”
