Takhrij Hadith 1993: "I witnessed Abu Umamah (may…"

Saʿid ibn ‘Abdullah al-Awdi said:

“
I witnessed Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in the throes of death. He said: “When I die, do to me what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to treat our deceased. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us: When one of your brothers dies and you have leveled the soil over his grave, let one of you stand at the head of his grave and say: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so. For he will hear him, but will not respond. Then let him say: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so. Then he will sit upright. Then let him say: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so. He will say: Guide me, may Allah have mercy upon you, though you will not perceive this. Then let him say: Remember the the belief upon which you departed from this world: that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger; that you were pleased with Allah as your Lord, Islam as your religion, Muhammad as your Prophet, and the Qur’an as your guide. For Munkar and Nakir will each take the other by the hand and say: Let us go; why should we remain with someone who has been taught his proof? Thus Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will be his defender against them.’ A man said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what if he does not know his mother’s name?’ He said: ‘He should be attributed to Ḥawwa (Eve), peace be upon her, and say: ‘O so-and-so, son of Ḥawwa.’”
