Takhrij Hadith 2008: "When we sat with the…"
ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
“
When we sat with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the prayer, we would say: ‘Peace be upon Allah before His servants. Peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Do not say, “Peace be upon Allah,” for Allah Himself is As-Salām. Rather, when one of you sits [for the tashahhud], let him say: “All greetings, prayers, and pure words are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.” For when you say that, it reaches every righteous servant of Allah in the heavens and the earth—or between the heavens and the earth. “I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.” Then let one of you choose whichever supplication he likes best and supplicate with it.””
