Takhrij Hadith 2100: "I said to ʿAbd al-Rahman…"

I said to ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf (may Allah be pleased with him): “How did you pledge allegiance to ʿUthman and leave ʿAli?” He replied: “What fault is mine? I began with ʿAli and said to him: ‘I pledge allegiance to you on the basis of the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the way of Abu Bakr and ʿUmar.’ He said: ‘To the best of my ability.’ He then said: “I presented the same terms to ʿUthman, and he accepted them.”
