Takhrij Hadith 2122: "The Messenger of Allah (peace…"
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported:
“
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent out an army in which there was a man named Hudayr. That year, they were suffering from severe food shortages, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) provided provisions for his companions but forgot to provide any for Hudayr. Hudayr set out patiently, seeking Allah’s reward. He was at the rear of the caravan, saying: “La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Alhamdulillah, Subhan Allah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Allah is the Greatest, all praise is due to Allah, glory be to Allah, and there is no might nor power except through Allah).” He would also say, “What an excellent provision this is, my Lord!” He continued repeating these words as he travelled at the rear of the caravan. Then Jibril came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “My Lord has sent me to inform you that you provided provisions for your companions but forgot to provide for Hudayr. He is at the rear of the caravan, saying, ‘La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Subhan Allah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.’ He also says, ‘What an excellent provision this is, my Lord!’ His words will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection, extending between the heavens and the earth. So send provisions to him.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then called a man, gave him Hudayr’s provisions, and instructed him to remember what Hudayr said when he reached him and when he handed him the provisions. He also told him to say: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sends you greetings of peace and the mercy of Allah. He informs you that he had forgotten to provide provisions for you, and that my Lord, Blessed and Exalted, sent Jibril to remind me of you. Jibril informed me of your whereabouts.” The man set out and found Hudayr saying: “La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.” He was also saying, “What an excellent provision this is, my Lord!” The man approached him and said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sends you greetings of peace and the mercy of Allah. He has sent me to you with provisions, and he says that he had simply forgotten you, so Jibril was sent down to remind him of you.” Hudayr praised Allah, extolled Him, and invoked blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he said: “Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘alamin! My Lord has remembered me from above the seven heavens and from above His Throne, and He has shown mercy to my hunger and weakness. O my Lord, just as You did not forget Hudayr, make Hudayr one who never forgets You.” The man memorised what Hudayr said and returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He informed him of what Hudayr had said when he arrived and of his words upon receiving the message. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Had you raised your head towards the sky, you would have seen his words shining forth as a radiant light extending between the heavens and the earth.””
