Takhrij Hadith 252: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ…"
On the authority of Sa’d, may Allah be pleased with him:
“
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed gifts to a group of men while I was sitting there, but he skipped one man whom I considered the best among them, so I asked: “O Messenger of Allah, why did you leave out so-and-so? By Allah, I truly believe him to be a believer”. The Prophet ﷺsaid: “Or just a Muslim” I remained silent for a short while, but my personal knowledge of the man's virtue overwhelmed me, so I repeated my question: “Why did you leave out so-and-so? By Allah, I truly believe him to be a believer”, and he again replied: “Or just a Muslim”. Once more, my knowledge of the man got the better of me and I repeated my question, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated his reply, but then added: “O Sa'd, I sometimes give gifts to a man while another is more beloved to me than him, out of fear that Allah might throw him face-first into the Fire”.”
