Takhrij Hadith 332: "This son of mine is…"

It is reported that ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) was approached by a man who brought his son and said:

“
This son of mine is undutiful to me.” So ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the son: “Do you not fear Allah regarding your disobedience to your father? Indeed, the father has such-and-such rights, and such-and-such rights.” The son replied: “O Commander of the Believers, does a son not have rights over his father?” ʿUmar said: “Yes. His right over his father is that he should choose a worthy mother for him”—meaning that he should not marry a lowly woman such that the child would later be reproached because of her—“and that he should give him a good name and teach him the Book (i.e., writing or the Scripture).” The son then said: “By Allah, he did not choose a worthy mother for me. She was nothing but a Sindhi slave woman whom he purchased for four hundred dirhams. Nor did he give me a good name; he named me Juʿal the male bat, or a dung beetle ). And he did not teach me a single verse from the Book of Allah.” Thereupon ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to the father and said: “You complain that your son is undutiful to you! You were undutiful to him before he was ever undutiful to you”.
