Takhrij Hadith 348: "I came to the Prophet…"
On the authority of ‘Amir ibn Laqit al-‘Amiri, who said:
“
I came to the Prophet ﷺ as a delegate to give him the glad tidings of the acceptance of Islam of my people and their obedience. When I informed him of the news, he said: ‘You are the blessed delegate; may Allah bless you.’ He then wiped over my forelock, shook my hand, and my people joined him that morning. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Allah has decreed nothing but good for Banu ‘Amir. By Allah, were it not for the ancestor of Quraysh contending for it, the caliphate would have belonged to Banu ‘Amir ibn Saʿsaʿah; but the ancestor of Quraysh competes for it.’ Then, when the Prophet ﷺ entered the house, he said: ‘Have you given your guest anything to eat? ‘Aisha said: ‘We placed before him some dates, and we had nothing else.’ Then the sheep returned, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered a sheep to be slaughtered. I [‘Aisha] felt uneasy about it, so the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘What is the matter with you? We only slaughter them for ourselves. Whenever our flock increases beyond one hundred sheep, we slaughter one for ourselves.”
