Takhrij Hadith 361: "The affair of Banu Qaynuqa'…"

The affair of Banu Qaynuqa' began when an Arab woman came with some merchandise that she was bringing for sale. She sold it in the market of Banu Qaynuqa' and then sat with a jeweler there. The people kept trying to persuade her to uncover her face, but she refused. The jeweler then took the edge of her garment and tied it to her back without her noticing. When she stood up, part of her body was exposed, and they laughed at her. She cried out. A Muslim man then sprang upon the jeweler and killed him; the jeweler was a Jew. The Jews then attacked the Muslim and killed him. The family and supporters of the slain Muslim called upon the Muslims for help against the Jews. The Muslims became angered, and hostility broke out between them and Banu Qaynuqa'.
