Takhrij Hadith 401: "Jibril came to the Messenger…"
Ibn ‘Abbas narrated:
“
Jibril came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the sun had passed its zenith and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the Zuhr (midday) prayer. Then he came when the shadow of everything was equal to its length and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the ‘Asr (afternoon) prayer. Then he came to him when the sun set and the night commenced, and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the Maghrib (sunset) prayer. Then he came to him when the twilight vanished and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the ‘Isha (night) prayer. Then he came to him when the dawn appeared and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the Fajr (dawn) prayer. On the following day, he came to him when the shadow of everything was equal to its length and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the Zuhr prayer. Then he came to him when the shadow of everything was twice its length and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the ‘Asr prayer. Then he came to him when the sun set and the night commenced and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the Maghrib prayer. Then he came to him when a third of the night had passed and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the ‘Isha prayer. Then he came to him when the dawn had fully brightened and said: ‘Stand and pray.’ So he prayed the Fajr prayer. Then Jibril said to him: ‘These are the prayer times of the prophets before you, so adhere to them’.”
