Takhrij Hadith 414: "I recited a verse, and…"
Ubayy ibn Ka'b narrated:
“
I recited a verse, and Ibn Mas‘ud recited it differently. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “Did you not teach me such-and-such a verse in this manner?” He said: “Yes”. Then Ibn Mas‘ud said: “Did you not teach it to me in such-and-such a manner?” He said: “Yes, both of you are correct and proficient in your recitation”. I [Ubayy] said: “I then raised the matter further, so he struck my chest and said: “O Ubayy ibn Ka'b, I was taught the Qur'an, and I said: "In two ahruf (mode of recitation)?" It was said: "In two ahruf, or in three?" Then the angel who was with me said: "In three." So I said: "In three." This continued until it reached seven ahruf. All of them are sufficient and adequate. If you say "Forgiving, Merciful" or you say "All-Hearing, All-Knowing" or "All-Knowing, All-Hearing," Allah is indeed so, provided that you do not end a verse of punishment with mercy, or a verse of mercy with punishment”.”
