Takhrij Hadith 479: ""I was in a gathering…"
Narrated by Abu Idris al-Khawlani:
“
"I was in a gathering of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, among whom was Ubadah ibn al-Samit. They discussed the Witr prayer, and some said: “It is obligatory” while others said: “It is a Sunnah”. Thereupon Ubadah ibn al-Samit said: “As for me, I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Jibril, peace be upon him, came to me from Allah, Blessed and Exalted, and said: 'O Muhammad, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: I have made five prayers obligatory upon your nation. Whoever comes having observed them with their ablution, appointed times, bowing, and prostration, shall have a covenant with Me that I will admit him into Paradise. But whoever meets Me having fallen short in any of that—or words to that effect—shall have no covenant with Me; if I will, I shall punish him, and if I will, I shall show him mercy".”
