Takhrij Hadith 549: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ…"
Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As reported:
“
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us holding two books in his hands and said: “Do you know what these two books are?” We replied: “No, O Messenger of Allah, unless you inform us.” He said concerning the one in his right hand: “This is a book from the Lord of the worlds containing the names of the people of Paradise, along with the names of their fathers and their tribes. Their number has been completed down to the last of them, and there will never be any addition to them nor any reduction from them.” Then he said concerning the one in his left hand: “This is a book from the Lord of the worlds containing the names of the people of the Fire, along with the names of their fathers and their tribes. Their number has been completed down to the last of them, and there will never be any addition to them nor any reduction from them.” His Companions then said: “Then what is the purpose of deeds, O Messenger of Allah, if the matter has already been decided?” He replied: “Strive to do what is right and draw near to it, for the person destined for Paradise will be brought to a close with the deeds of the people of Paradise, no matter what deeds he may have done before, and the person destined for the Fire will be brought to a close with the deeds of the people of the Fire, no matter what deeds he may have done before.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast the two books aside with his hands and said: “Your Lord has finished with regard to His servants: one group will be in Paradise and another group will be in the Blaze.””
