Takhrij Hadith 579: "We were sitting in the…"
Al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir ibn Sa‘d reported:
“
We were sitting in the mosque with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Bashir was a man who spoke little. Then Abu Tha‘labah came and said, “O Bashir ibn Sa‘d, do you remember the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the rulers?” Hudhayfah was sitting nearby and replied: “I remember his sermon”. Abu Tha‘labah sat down, and Hudhayfah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Prophethood will remain among you for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will be a Caliphate following the way of Prophethood, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will be hereditary kingship, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will be a tyrannical rule, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills. Then there will again be a Caliphate following the way of Prophethood”. Then he fell silent.” Al-Nu‘man added: “Later, when ‘Umar came accompanied by Yazid ibn Al-Nu‘man, I wrote to him reminding him of this hadith and said: “I hope that the Commander of the Faithful will come after the period of hereditary kingship and tyrannical rule”. Yazid took the letter and presented it to ‘Umar, who was pleased with it and greatly impressed by it.”
