Takhrij Hadith 593: "The poor people came to…"
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
“
The poor people came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "The wealthy people have attained the highest ranks and the everlasting bliss. They pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, but they have an abundance of wealth by which they perform Hajj and 'Umrah, and participate in Jihad, and give charity." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch up with those who have surpassed you, and no one after you will catch up with you, and you will be the best of those among whom you live—except for those who do the same as you do? You should glorify Allah (say Subhan Allah), praise Him (say Alhamdulillah), and magnify Him (say Allahu Akbar) thirty-three times after every prayer." We later differed among ourselves; some of us said: "We should say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times." So I went back to him [the Prophet ﷺ], and he said: "Say: 'Subhan Allah, wal-hamdulillah, wallahu Akbar' until each of them has been said thirty-three times."”
