Takhrij Hadith 653: "The Prophet (peace and blessings…"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some Jews who were fasting on the Day of ‘Ashura. He asked: "What is the reason for this fast?" They replied: "This is the day on which Allah saved Moses and the Children of Israel from drowning, and Pharaoh drowned. It is also the day on which the Ark came to rest upon al-Judi. So Noah and Moses fasted it in gratitude to Allah". The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: "I have more right to Moses, and more right to fast on this day". Thereupon, he instructed his Companions to fast it.
