Takhrij Hadith 899: "The Angel of Death came…"

The Angel of Death came to the Prophet of Allah, Dawud (David). The Prophet, peace be upon him, stood up and said: 'Welcome, my brother and beloved, Angel of Death. Have you come to take my soul or merely to visit?' He replied: 'No. I have come to tell you about this young man who is sitting in your gathering. He has only ten days left to live.' The young man was twenty years old and used to come and sit with the Prophet of Allah. Dawud became distressed and kept watching the young man. Ten days passed, yet death did not come to him. Then the Angel of Death came to the Prophet again. Dawud stood up and said: 'Welcome, my brother and beloved, Angel of Death. Have you come to take my soul or merely to visit?' The Angel of Death replied: 'No. I have come to tell you about that young man who has just left your gathering.' Dawud said: 'Indeed, O Angel of Death. You told me he had ten days left to live, and now sixteen days have passed.' The Angel of Death said: 'My Lord commanded me to take his soul. So I searched east and west, but I could not find a single morsel of food for him to eat or a single sip of water for him to swallow. He had nothing left but a few remaining breaths. As he walked, I walked beside him. Then he passed by a poor man who said, "For Allah's sake, give me something." The young man reached into his pocket, took out six dinars, and gave them to the poor man. The poor man then supplicated, saying: "May Allah grant you a long life and make you a companion of Dawud in Paradise." Then the Lord of Might called out: "Come back, O Angel of Death. Do not take his soul." The Angel of Death said: 'My Lord, he had no morsel of food to eat, no sip of water to drink, and nothing left but a few breaths.' Allah said: 'Did you not see what he gave to the poor man?' He replied: 'Yes.' Allah said: 'Did you not hear the poor man's supplication?' He replied: 'Yes.' Allah then said: 'Go to the Prophet of Allah and convey My greetings to him. Tell him that Allah has granted the young man sixty more years in return for the six dinars. He will not die until he reaches the age of eighty, and he will be your companion, O Dawud, in Paradise.'"
