I took ʿAbdullah ibn Abi Talḥah al-Ansari to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was born. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wearing a cloak and besmearing one of his camels with tar. He asked: “Do you have any dates with you?” I said: “Yes” So I gave him some dates, and he put them in his mouth and chewed them. Then he opened the child’s mouth and placed some of it into his mouth, and the child began to smack his lips, so The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Ansar love dates”, and he named him ʿAbdullah.
