Takhrij Hadith 1200: "That when they came to…"
On the authority of 'Ali bin Husain:
“
That when they came to Medina from the presence of Yazid bin Mu'awiyah after the killing of Husain bin 'Ali, may Allah's mercy be upon him, al-Miswar bin Makhramah met him and said to him 'Do you have any need you command me with? So I said to him 'No. So he said to him 'Are you giving me the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? For indeed I fear that the people will overcome you for it, and by Allah, if you give it to me, they will never reach it until my soul is taken. Indeed 'Ali bin Abi Talib proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl while having Fatimah, peace be upon her, so I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ preaching to the people regarding that on this pulpit of his, and I was on that day a boy who had reached puberty. So he said 'Indeed Fatimah is from me, and I fear that she will be tried in her religion.' Then he mentioned a son-in-law of his from Bani 'Abd Shams, so he praised him well in his marriage alliance with him. He said 'He spoke to me and proved truthful to me, and he promised me and fulfilled for me. And indeed I do not make a lawful thing forbidden, nor a forbidden thing lawful, but by Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never gather”
