Takhrij Hadith 1204: "That when the Messenger of…"
On the authority of Abu Hurairah:
“
That when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the expedition of Khaybar, he traveled during his night until, when drowsiness overtook him, he stopped to rest at the end of the night, and he said to Bilal 'Guard the night for us. So Bilal prayed what was decreed for him, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions slept. When dawn approached, Bilal leaned against his mount facing the dawn, but sleep overcame Bilal's eyes while he was leaning against his mount. Neither the Messenger of Allah ﷺ nor Bilal nor any of his companions woke up until the sun beat down upon them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the first of them to wake up, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was startled and said 'O Bilal! So Bilal said 'The One Who took your soul took my soul, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said 'Lead away. So they led their mounts away a little distance, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ablution, and commanded Bilal, who then called the Iqamah for the prayer, and he led them in the dawn prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said 'Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it, for indeed Allah said: {Establish prayer for My remembrance}.”
