Takhrij Hadith 1242: "Ibn 'Abbas used to permit…"

Ibn 'Abbas used to permit temporary marriage (mut'ah), whereas Ibn al-Zubayr used to forbid it. I mentioned that to Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, and he said: "The discussion of this matter came through me. We practiced temporary marriage during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then, when 'Umar assumed the caliphate, he said: Allah permitted His Messenger whatever He willed by whatever He willed, and the Qur'an has now been revealed in full. So complete the Hajj and the 'Umrah for Allah as Allah has commanded you, and put an end to temporary marriage with these women. If any man is brought to me who has contracted a marriage for a fixed term, I will certainly have him stoned.'"
