During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr (RA), and the first two years of the caliphate of 'Umar (RA), a triple pronouncement of divorce was treated as a single divorce. Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: “Indeed, people have become hasty in a matter in which they used to have patience; if only we were to enforce it upon them.” So he enforced it upon them."
