Hadith 1512

Takhrij Hadith 1512: "Abu Musa Al-Ashari was our…"

It was narrated from Dabbah ibn Mihsan Al-Anazi; he said:

“
Abu Musa Al-Ashari was our governor in Basra, so he sent me in his delegation to Umar ibn Al-Khattab. I came to Umar and knocked on his door, so he came out to me and said: Who are you?. I said: I am Dabbah ibn Mihsan Al-Anazi. He said: So he admitted me into his house and brought food to me, so I ate. Then I mentioned Abu Bakr As-Siddiq to him, and he wept. So I said to him: You are better than Abu Bakr. He wept even more because of that, then he said while weeping: By Allah! One night of Abu Bakr and one day are better than Umar and the family of Umar. Would you like me to tell you about his day and his night?. I said: Yes, O Commander of the Believers. He said: As for the night; when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out fleeing from the people of Mecca, he went out at night, and Abu Bakr followed him. He would walk sometimes in front of him, sometimes behind him, sometimes on his right, and sometimes on his left. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: What is this, O Abu Bakr?! I do not know this to be from your usual conduct!. He said: O Messenger of Allah! I remember those lying in wait, so I go in front of you, and I remember those pursuing, so I go behind you, and sometimes on your right and sometimes on your left; I do not feel safe for you. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) walked the whole night until the road injured the tips of his toes. When Abu Bakr saw him, he carried him on his shoulder and began hurrying with him until he brought him to the mouth of the cave, then he set him down, and said: By the One Who sent you with the truth; you shall not enter it until I enter before you. If there is anything in it, it will strike me instead of you. He said: So Abu Bakr entered and saw nothing. Then he said to him: Sit; for there are openings in the cave that I will block. He had a cloak, so he tore it and began blocking the openings one by one with it, until two holes remained. Then he took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), carried him, and brought him into the cave, then placed his feet into the two holes. The vipers and snakes kept striking and biting him until morning, and he kept twisting from the intensity of the pain while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not know of that, and he was saying to him: O Abu Bakr! {Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us} [At-Tawbah: 40]; so Allah Almighty sent down upon him and upon His Messenger tranquility and reassurance for Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him; this was his night. As for his day; when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) died, the Arabs apostatized. Some of them said: We will pray but not give zakah, and some of them said: We will give zakah but not pray. So I came to him, sparing no sincere advice, and said: O successor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Be gentle with the people. Others also said that; so Abu Bakr said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away and revelation has ceased, and by Allah! If they withheld from me a rope which they used to give to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I would fight them over it. He said: So we fought alongside him, and by Allah, he was rightly guided in his affair; this was his day
