Takhrij Hadith 1523: "One of his companions was…"
It is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ:
“
One of his companions was on his deathbed, and he uttered three words: If only it had been new. Then he would lose consciousness, and wake up saying: If only it had been far. Then he would lose consciousness again, and wake up saying: If only it had been whole. Then his soul departed. The companions, may Allah be pleased with them, went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him about these words. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: This man, one day, was walking while carrying an old garment. He found a poor man complaining from the severe cold, so he gave him the garment. When death came to him, and he saw one of the palaces of Paradise, the angels of death said to him: This is your palace. He said: For which deed did I earn this? They said to him: Because one night you gave a garment in charity to a poor man. The man said: But it was worn out, so what if it had been new? If only it had been new. And one day he was going to the mosque, and he saw a disabled man wanting to go to the mosque, so he carried him to the mosque. When death came to him, and he saw one of the palaces of Paradise, the angels of death said to him: This is your palace. He said: For which deed did I earn this? They said to him: Because you carried a disabled man so he could pray in the mosque. The man said: But the mosque was near, so what if it had been far? If only it had been far. And one day he was walking carrying part of a loaf of bread. He found a hungry poor man, so he gave him part of it. When death came to him and he saw one of the palaces of Paradise, the angels of death said to him: This is your palace. He said: For which deed did I earn this? They said to him: Because you gave part of a loaf in charity to a poor man. The man said: But it was only part of a loaf, so what if it had been whole? If only it had been whole.”
