It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Masud, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said :

“

Trading insults with a Muslim is evildoing and fighting him is disbelief (a grave act resembling disbelief, not necessarily expelling one from Islam).

”
