Takhrij Hadith 1616: "That he delivered a sermon…"
It was narrated from Qays ibn Abi Hazim, from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq :
“
That he delivered a sermon and said: O people, you recite this verse and place it in a meaning other than what Allah intended: {O you who believe! Guard your own souls: if you follow (right) guidance, no hurt can come to you from those who stray}. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: If people see evil among themselves and do not denounce it, Allah is soon to encompass them all with punishment.”
