Takhrij Hadith 1653: "Abu Bakr met me and…"
It was narrated from Hanzalah Al-Usayyidi, who was one of the scribes (those who wrote for the Messenger of Allah), that he said:
“
Abu Bakr met me and said: How are you, O Hanzalah? He said: I said: Hanzalah has become a hypocrite. He said: Glory be to Allah! What are you saying? He said: I said: We are with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he reminds us of the Fire and Paradise until it is as if we see them with our own eyes. Then when we leave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we attend to our wives, children, and properties (worldly affairs), and we forget much. Abu Bakr said: By Allah, we experience the same as this. So Abu Bakr and I went until we entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: Hanzalah has become a hypocrite, O Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is that? I said: O Messenger of Allah, we are with you, and you remind us of the Fire and Paradise until it is as if we see them with our own eyes. Then when we leave you, we attend to our wives, children, and properties, and we forget much. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if you were to remain as you are when you are with me and in dhikr (remembrance of Allah), the angels would shake hands with you on your beds and in your roads. But, O Hanzalah, there is a time for this and a time for that. He said it three times.”
