Takhrij Hadith 1767: "Ali ibn Abi Talib (may…"

Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came out from the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness from which he died. The people said: O Abu Hasan, how is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) this morning? He said: By the praise of Allah, he is recovering. Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib then took him by the hand and said to him: By Allah, after three days you will be a servant of the staff (subject to another’s authority). By Allah, I believe that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will die from this illness of his. I recognize the faces of the sons of Abd al-Muttalib when death approaches. Come with me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and let us ask him to whom this authority will belong. If it is to be among us, we will know that; and if it is to be among others, we will know that, and he may give instructions concerning us. Ali said: By Allah, if we ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for it and he refuses it to us, the people will never give it to us after him. By Allah, I will not ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for it.
