Takhrij Hadith 1849: "There was a group of…"

There was a group of Banu Layth living about two miles from Madinah. A man had proposed to a woman from among them during the pre-Islamic period, but they had refused to marry her to him. He came to them wearing a fine garment and said: “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has clothed me in this and instructed me to have authority over your wealth and your blood.” He then went and stayed with that woman to whom he had previously proposed. The people sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: “The enemy of Allah has lied.” He then sent a man and said: “If you find him alive—and I do not think you will find him alive—then strike his neck. But if you find him dead, burn him with fire.” The man went to him and found that he had been bitten by a viper and had died, so he burned him with fire. He (the narrator) said: That is [the occasion for] the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire."
