Takhrij Hadith 1870: "When the verse was revealed,…"
Narrated from Asma’ bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
“
When the verse was revealed, {Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he} Al-'Awra', Umm Jamīl bint Ḥarb, came forward wailing, with a stone in her hand, saying: “We reject the blameworthy one, we detest his religion, and we disobey his command.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the mosque, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him. When Abu Bakr saw her, he said: “O Messenger of Allah, she is coming, and I fear that she may see you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “She will not see me.” He then recited some Qur’an by which he sought protection, as he said, and recited: {And when you recite the Qur’an, We place between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a hidden barrier.} She came forward until she stood before Abu Bakr, but she did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: “O Abu Bakr, I have been told that your companion has insulted me.” He replied: “No, by the Lord of this House, he has not insulted you.” She then turned away, saying: “Quraysh already knows that I am the daughter of their master."”
