Takhrij Hadith 1877: "“Was there ever a day…"

“Was there ever a day that was harder for you than the Day of Uhud?” He said: “I suffered at the hands of your people what I suffered, and the hardest of what I suffered from them was on the Day of al-ʿAqabah, when I presented myself to Ibn ʿAbd Yalil ibn ʿAbd Kulal, but he did not respond to what I was calling him to. So I departed, deeply distressed, walking with grief upon my face, and I did not recover from my distress until I reached Qarn al-Thaʿalib. I raised my head, and there I saw a cloud shading me. I looked, and there was Jibril in it. He called me and said: ‘Indeed, Allah has heard what your people said to you and how they rejected your call. And He has sent to you the Angel of the Mountains so that you may command him to do whatever you wish concerning them.’ “Then the Angel of the Mountains called me, greeted me, and said: ‘O Muhammad, I will do whatever you wish. If you wish, I will bring together upon them the two mountains.’ “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Rather, I hope that Allah will bring forth from their offspring those who will worship Allah alone and associate nothing with Him.”
